Sylvia and I took the boys to a small town in our state that is known for its cultural food and stores. I know I am being vague, but hey, that is the way it is. It was about a five hour drive that we all survived. For those of you with kids, you know what I mean. Jack likes to tease Sylvia about her driving, but it is all in good fun. We made it down there and found our nice little Inn. We had “the big house” which was a small house with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a den area and a small kitchen.
The first night there we walked to downtown in 100 degree heat. Except for the heat, it wasn’t a bad walk. We drove the next day!! We ate a very nice dinner and had some ice cream. The next day we had breakfast in the our “big house” and then went downtown. We went into several interesting shops and then grabbed some lunch and pastries at a small bakery. We took them back to the house and ate lunch. Sylvia played with the boys and let me lay down!
Later we took Ethan with us and went back downtown. Jack requested to stay back and rest. He is the typical teen who is used to laying around. We went to several more shops. We also got some fudge and some chocolate that was made right in the shop! We quickly took it back to the house to keep in the fridge so it wouldn’t melt. We got Jack and grabbed some more dinner. Sylvia ate something that she had eaten while traveling in a different country and Jack ate a HUGE steak! Ethan downed a corn dog(thank goodness for variety in child menus). We walked main street some more and then went back to the house. We had a nice evening there playing some board games with the kids.
The next day we drove to see my sister! We had a great visit with her and she and Sylvia really got along well. My nephew asked who Sylvia was and I told him a friend. He is only eight and we didn’t feel the need to have to explain it all to him. We had a nice Italian dinner and then played more games at my sister’s house that night. We took a ton of left overs home that we ate for lunch the next day. Jack really enjoyed the board games as did the rest of us. Ethan played with my nephew. We headed home after lunch. The drive home always seems LONG and it was! We made it though and have finally recovered, I think, from the trip.
The boys go back to school in a few weeks. Overall, it was a great vacation. We had some issues with Ethan and his behavior, but we got it under control. Jack really enjoyed having Sylvia to talk too. We all had a bit of a melt down once we got home and later Jack gave Sylvia a hug and apologized for some of his behavior. We were both pleased to see how he handled it. This was the first time he had ever given her a hug!
The next time we travel though, I think we will be sure it isn’t in the middle of a HEAT WAVE! The heat didn’t help any of our moods, but we survived it and had a good time too!
